What is Stellar Lumens (XLM)?
Stellar Lumens (XLM) is the native currency of the Stellar network, a public blockchain designed for fast, low-cost international transfers and asset exchange. The project was co-founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb, along with lawyer and entrepreneur Joyce Kim, and is supported by the non-profit Stellar Development Foundation. They created Stellar to make moving money across borders as easy and affordable as sending an email, especially for people and regions underserved by traditional banking. The network reaches agreement using the Stellar Consensus Protocol, which is built on the Federated Byzantine Agreement model, where validators choose trusted peers and collectively vote to confirm transactions quickly without mining or staking. XLM serves as the network’s native utility token—it pays transaction fees, prevents spam, and provides the minimum balance that helps keep accounts efficient. While most assets on Stellar are issued by anchors and require trustlines to hold them, XLM is the one asset that doesn’t depend on an issuer and doesn’t require trust setup, which makes it central to the system’s operation. The network’s built-in decentralized exchange and automated market maker liquidity pools allow assets to be swapped or routed through path payments, making XLM a key bridge asset in multi-currency transfers. As the network expanded, the Soroban smart contract platform was introduced and activated through a protocol upgrade coordinated by validators, bringing more programmability and new applications to Stellar.
