PPC (Peercoin) is a decentralized and open-source cryptocurrency launched in 2012 by Sunny King and Scott Nadal. It was created to become a more energy-efficient alternative to Bitcoin, using a unique combination of Proof-of-Work (PoW) and Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus algorithms.

The PoW component implements a fair and transparent coin distribution, while the PoS component secures the network and verifies transactions, presenting a more environmentally-friendly alternative to energy-intensive PoW mining.

PPC protocol is built around the concept of "minting," which involves users holding coins in their wallet and using it to confirm transactions and create new coins through the PoS algorithm. The more coins a user holds, the higher their chance of being selected to mint the next block, thus earning rewards in the form of newly minted coins, as well as transaction fees.

PPC features a unique "cold storage minting" function that allows users to securely mint new coins while keeping their coins offline in a "cold storage" wallet for added security. PPC also implemented several features that improve its efficiency and security, such as a "checkpoint" system, which prevents attacks on the network by invalidating fraudulent blocks.

PPC has a limited supply of 2 billion coins, making it a deflationary asset with a value that increases over time as supply decreases.
