Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a decentralized, open-source Layer-1 blockchain network that preserves the original Ethereum protocol following the 2016 split caused by The DAO exploit and the subsequent hard fork. It operates under the principle of immutability, asserting that blockchain transactions are permanent and should not be altered by social or governance intervention. Ethereum Classic employs a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, secured by miners using the Etchash algorithm, to validate transactions and maintain network integrity. It remains fully Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible, allowing developers to deploy and execute smart contracts identical to those on Ethereum. The network uses ETC, its native cryptocurrency, to pay for computational “gas” fees, reward miners, and enable value transfers. Its monetary policy, defined by the “5M20” emission schedule, introduces periodic block-reward reductions that lead toward a fixed total supply, promoting long-term scarcity. Governance is coordinated through the Ethereum Classic Improvement Proposal (ECIP) process, which guides protocol development and upgrades.
