What is THORChain (RUNE)?
THORChain (RUNE) is a decentralized protocol built on the Cosmos SDK and secured by the Tendermint BFT consensus engine. It was created in 2018 by a mostly anonymous team led by John-Paul Thorbjornsen, known as JP Thor, with the goal of enabling permissionless, native cross-chain swaps—so users could trade assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum directly without using wrapped tokens or centralized exchanges. As of now, RUNE’s market capitalization is about $530 million, underscoring its continuing influence in the decentralized finance ecosystem.
To make this possible, THORChain uses the Bifröst bridge, which relies on a Threshold Signature Scheme to coordinate the Asgard and Yggdrasil vaults. These vaults securely hold pooled assets and authorize transactions through distributed key signing. The network’s native token, RUNE, powers every layer of the system. Validators called THORNodes bond RUNE under a Proof of Bond model, which ties network security directly to the value of the token. Liquidity Providers also pair RUNE with other assets in Continuous Liquidity Pools—an automated market maker model that applies a slip-based fee to balance pool depth and discourage large price impacts. For larger trades, the protocol supports Streaming Swaps, which split transactions over time to reduce slippage.
Rewards in the ecosystem are managed through the Incentive Pendulum, which dynamically adjusts payouts between THORNodes and Liquidity Providers to maintain equilibrium between bonded and pooled RUNE. Regular Validator Churn refreshes the validator set to preserve security, while Midgard, the network’s data layer, connects to user interfaces and exposes transaction and pool data.
